Bulldogge Varieties

The bulldog of several hundred years ago was a formidable animal, bred specifically for hunting large and violent game. It’s dependability and brave nature was abused by breeders and eventually turned it into a fighting dog. The original strains of bulldogs were created from the ancient Mastiff and Bullmastiff breeds. Their wrinkles, up-turned noses, rose ears, strong heads, and second-to-none muscular build was all selected in the breed for a purpose. Their fearless attitude, stubborn tenacity, and surprising agility made them a very valuable and distinct breed.

As the dog fighting became more popular and subsequently outlawed, the bulldog was bred down and crossed with pug pedigree to create the commonly recognized English Bulldog of today. And although the English Bulldog has a good natured temperament, they are a high maintenance pet. As a result of the poor breeding tactics, they suffer from many health problems. Skeletal defects such as hip dysplasia, vertebrae deformities, and poor elbows are examples of the disproportionate body structure. In addition, the muzzle is too short causing poor breathing capability. This results in excessive snoring, the inability to cool off through panting, and in some cases, choking on the soft palate. Severe skin conditions from the excessive wrinkles, congenital heart conditions, and genetic eye problems are also common. Many females must be artificially bred and nearly all require caesarian section birthing.

The Olde Victorian Bulldogge is a unique breed of bulldogges which has carefully been groomed for the best qualities in a bulldogge. The OVB is a larger dogge to provide proper skeletal structure. It also represents the heavy muscular build and agility of the original breed. Their temperament has been selectively watched, and while the OVB is full of bully stubbornness, it also has a gentle quality that is suitable for a family with children. The OVB will have a strong personality, backing down from no challenge, but should not have outward aggression. The pride of the OVB is its health. Virtually none of the English Bulldog problems exist in the OVB. The OVB is truly a complete dogge. The OVB is the Ultimate Bulldogge.
